V Battery of the Royal Horse Artillery, part of the Meerut Brigade, 2nd Indian Cavalry Division, was in India when the war started but by the end of 1914 they had reached France. On 2nd March, 1915 they were training at Serny, a small village to the west of Aire-sur-la-Lys, when there was an accident involving a trench mortar which killed 7 men and wounded 39 more. Ernest Purchas was one of those wounded and died from his wounds on the following day,. |
